Tomasko, RN - Editor-In-Chief LA YOGA MAGAZINEFortunately, I've had the honor of being in classes where Ena Vie shares her lyrical, heartfelt voice and collaborations with musical partner Howard Lipp. I've even been lucky enough to have her sing when Ive taught. I've also seen her with a full band on a Friday night in the bar scene where her conscious take on the singer-songwriter genre shines a light amidst the pool tables and pints of beer. Her musical talent combines years of developing skillful singer-songwriter chops with an attitude of love and exploration. In her singer-songwriter infused album "From Within," tunes like "Down that Road" combine a catchy melody with inviting lyrics that ask us to question what were seeking and how were finding it. She sings, You've been down that road; you know where it ends; that's not where you want to be and now it all depends on you to accept the lead...Take my hand and we'll discover more.Ena Vie delivers on this promise. The repetition of shanti, the Sanskrit word for peace, is featured in Od Yavo.This isn't a kirtan album, per se, but it will appeal to lovers of the kirtan genre as well as those unfamiliar with the form who will be drawn in by Ena Vie's expressive and melodic voice. About Heart of Devotion From the time I can remember, devotional music was played in my childhood home. While my dad listened to jazz standards and rock'n'roll, my mom listened to music devoted to the divine. Both genres were highly spiritual to me and influenced me from an early age. At our family church, music was a strong element of the community, and often I would go to a special meeting after the main service, called the afterglow, which was held in a darkened and quiet room for those who wanted to continue in devotion. It was there that I connected deeply with the healing power of sound and praise to that which cannot be named. O Narayana! O Vasudeva!The name Narayana is a Sanskrit compound, with the members nara, which means "human, man", and ayana "eternal, without ending (a-yana)". One interpretation of the word Narayana: "Nara" meaning human and "Ayana" means direction/goal. Hence Narayana refers to the "direction of a human" (or the one that helps a human to his/her goal) -- that towards moksha, (liberation).
